5G spectrum auction enters third day, bids worth Rs 1.5 trillion so far

For the auction of 5G telecom spectrum, a bid of Rs. 1,49,454 crore at the end of the second day and the much awaited spectrum sale has been extended for the third day.

A comparison of two-day data shows that 5G Spectrum auction fetches Rs. 71,639.2 crore more than the 2021 4G spectrum auction. In percentage terms, it is higher by 92.06 per cent. Five rounds of auction were held on Wednesday, taking the total to nine rounds.

Earlier it was expected that the auction would be completed on the second day – Wednesday.

The bids received so far are almost double the amount received for 4G spectrum auction in 2021. In the auction of 4G spectrum in March 2021, Rs. 77,814.80. In 2021 the auction was concluded in two days.

Giving an update about the second day of the auction, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav said on Wednesday: “700 MHz has got good response, this time it is sold out. Compared to 3G and 4G, 5G has very low latency which will enhance the user experience in different regions. Low latency describes the efficiency of processing large amounts of data messages with minimal latency. 5G services are expected to be about 10 times faster than 4G. The 5G rollout is expected to drive further developments in remote data monitoring in sectors such as mining, warehousing, telemedicine and manufacturing.

The spectrum allocation to telecom operators is expected before August 15 and the initial 5G services in the country will start by September-October. Thereafter, high-speed 5G telecom services are expected to be offered in many cities of the country by the end of 2022.
