6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes southern Iran

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck southern Iran early Saturday.

According to the EMSC, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

“Earthquake of magnitude: 6.2, 02-07-2022, 04:55:20 IST, Latitude: 26.77 & Long: 55.35, Depth: 33 km, Location: Southern Iran,” tweeted the National Center for Seismology today.

After the earthquake, three more earthquakes occurred in southern Iran.

According to EMSC, another earthquake of magnitude 3.8 on the Richter scale struck at around 6.07 am on Saturday, followed by tremors of 4.2 and 3.7 at 6.44 and 6.51 am, respectively.

Earlier last week, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck between Charak port and Iran’s Kish island, Reuters reported.

It is worth noting that in 1990, nearly 40,000 people were killed in Iran’s deadliest earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale, that shook the north of the country.
