6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia’s Sumatra island – Times of India

Jakarta: 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast Indonesia‘s Sumatra The island is the third earthquake in the region since early Monday, according to the country’s geophysics agency.

The agency said no casualties were reported but there was minor damage to buildings on the island of Siberat.
Separately, Nowriadi, a local disaster official for the Mentawai islands, told Reuters that residents of several villages were evacuated to higher ground and there was little damage to a local church, school and health facility.
The disaster agency urged the public not to panic and warned about the potential for aftershocks.
Padang was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 2009, which killed more than 1,100 people, injured many and caused widespread destruction.
