6 months rent free accommodation for retired CJI, round the clock security for SC judges

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) retiring from the Supreme Court shall be entitled to rent-free Type-VI accommodation in Delhi for a period of six months from the date of retirement – ​​in addition to the specified official residence.

In addition, they will also be entitled to round the clock security cover at their residence in addition to round the clock personal security guard for a period of one year from the date of retirement.

In addition, they will be entitled to Driver and Secretarial Assistant for the same period.

The government on Tuesday said that the judges of the apex court will get round the clock security for one year on retirement.

The Department of Justice in the Law Ministry notified the amended ‘Supreme Court Judge Rules’ to extend the driver facility and secretarial assistant to former SC judges for one year from the date of retirement.

An official said the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court is 34 judges and an average of three retires annually.

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, who is stepping down on Friday, will be one of the first to take advantage of the new facility after retirement.

“A retired Chief Justice or a retired judge (of the apex court) shall be entitled to the protocol to extend etiquette in ceremonial lounges at airports,” the amended rule read.

According to the notification, the driver with full salary and allowances payable to the regular employees will be taken from the establishment of the Supreme Court or High Court.

The Secretarial Assistant will be equivalent to the level of Branch Officer in the Supreme Court.

“A retired Chief Justice or retired judge shall be entitled to round-the-clock security cover at the residence in addition to round the clock personal security guard for a period of one year from the date of retirement,” the notification said.

It also said that a retired Chief Justice of India “shall be entitled to rent-free Type-VII accommodation in Delhi (other than the specified official residence) for a period of six months from the date of retirement.”

Type VII accommodation is usually provided to sitting MPs who have been former Union Ministers.

Sources said some of these issues had come up during the chief ministers-chief justices’ conference held here recently. The judges had flagged various issues and some of them were accommodated by amending the SC Judges Rules on Tuesday.
