When: August 4
Where: Cinemas

Deadpool 2 director bullet train – A high-octane thriller set on the tracks of modern Japan. Drawing inspiration from action set pieces in Train to Busan, this Brad Pitt-starrer takes a ridiculous John Wick-like premise and throws it into a fast-moving train. The unlucky killer Ladybug (Pitt) is determined to do her job in peace after several failures. As fate would have it, his ride is filled with four other assassins who share different objectives, setting off a chain reaction of bone-crushing fights.

Time is running out, as the bullet train reaches its destination Kyoto, revealing each deadly adversary and their objectives. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has taken a liking to action movies ever since Theory, playing the role of Tangerine, a British assassin adept at hand-to-hand combat. Joy King plays an assassin, appropriate for her age, in the guise of a schoolgirl, while Hiroyuki Sanada wields a katana to bite the oncoming crowd.

Director David Leach adapted the film from the Japanese novel Maria Beetle, which also bears the name of Sandra Bullock’s character, the ladybug’s handler. The cast is loaded, as evidenced by the oversaturated poster, featuring killers like Michael Shannon, Andrew Cozy, and Zazie Beats, while Karen Fukuhara (boys) plays the role of a train crew member.

re

When: 19 August
Where: Cinemas

Another remake on this list comes from the filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, which tries to re-imagine the Spanish Netflix film Mirage. Taapsee Pannu (Pink) leads the cast as Antara who moves to a new house with her family. An old TV set found in the storeroom triggers a chain of strange events, as Antara is able to converse with the ghost of a child through transmission. The brief interaction causes a space-time continuum glitch – altering reality and affecting events in the present.

The re-trailer doesn’t really explain the logic behind the events, but fans can expect horror themes and a centuries-old murder mystery to hang over there.

Hardy Nation (as listed on IMDb) plays a 12-year-old who delivers a message 25 years in the future, while Rahul Bhat plays Antara’s carefree husband. Pavail Gulati, who starred opposite Pannu in 2020’s Thappad, returns as a DCP officer, while M. Nassar (Baahubali movies) plays some kind of scientist. re,

No

When: 19 August
Where: Cinemas

According to the sparse information in the trailers so far, Jordan Peele’s No Looks pretty dope. Set in an isolated California town, two siblings, played by Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, discover a strange phenomenon in the skies above. A UFO, the presence of which is reported by violently reacting horses, often appears to devour animals at night. Noticing this, Jupe – played by Steven Yeun (Minari) – tries to profit from an otherworldly phenomenon by using horses as bait, the owner of an adjacent theme park.

Here, things seem to be going awry, as aliens start attacking everyone. It is also implied that looking up at the sky can harm you, as Palmer repeated to himself, “Don’t look.” Compared to his previous two films, Get Out and Us, Peele has a bigger scope to work with here — even adding cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema to his arsenal for those grand-scale scenes. While ‘Nope’ has already released in US cinemas, Indians will have to wait for a few more weeks.
