7 Easy Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Cough and Cold in Kids

Ayurvedic remedies for cold and cough: Everyone likes to sip hot coffee on a pleasant winter day. However, this season also brings with it a tale of woe: cold and cough. When your child has a common cold, you always worry about how to make them comfortable. You want to do everything you can to help your child feel better. Make sure you take your child to the doctor if the condition worsens but this common cold can be bothersome even if it is mild.

According to Ayurveda, an imbalance in any one of the three doshas- Vata, Pitta or Kapha can lead to a disease. In this instance, an excess of pitta and kapha in the body causes nasal congestion and cough.

Apart from medicines and cough syrups, try some easy Ayurvedic home remedies for cough and cold to feel better.

1. Licorice

The Ayurvedic plant mulethi or licorice, commonly known as “sweet wood”, is useful for cough. Mulethi has expectorant properties. The mucus lining the airways is thinner and looser, reducing congestion and making it easier to cough up.

You can take it in the form of licorice water or decoction. Just take 1 teaspoon of liquorice powder and add it to 1 glass of warm water. Drink it twice a day. You can also add other spices and make the kadha even if your kids don’t like it much.

2. Tulsi

Tulsi is known as “Queen of Herbs” and “Mother Medicine of Nature” in Ayurveda. Tulsi delays the onset of infection by increasing antibody synthesis. Tulsi has expectorant effects. By helping your child clear the mucus from their cough, it helps to clear the airways.

When your children wake up in the morning, let them chew 4-5 basil leaves. You can continue to give tulsi leaves to your kids to strengthen their immune system.

3. Honey

Honey helps you to break out the thick mucus, which is rich in antimicrobial properties, which gives relief from chest congestion. This reduces wet cough.

To reduce the severity of cough, take one teaspoon of honey before going to bed at night. Continue until there is no improvement in cough. Take 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed ginger juice, 1 pinch of black pepper and a little honey in boiling water.

4. Cinnamon

One of the many health benefits of this aromatic woody spice is relief from cough and cold symptoms. It helps fight the common cold virus. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe a sore throat.

Mix 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder in 1 teaspoon honey. For at least three days, mix and ask your kids to take it twice a day.

5. Giloy

The heart-shaped leaves of Giloy, also known as Amrita or Guduchi in Hindi, are similar to betel leaves. The anti-inflammatory properties of Giloy are remarkable. This reduces sore throat and frequent cough. It helps in the treatment of cold and cough caused by allergies caused by pollen, smoke or smog. Additionally, it helps with tonsillitis and the common cold. It is also the best herb to increase immunity in children.

You can give two spoons of Giloy juice with warm water to your child in the morning on an empty stomach or you can opt for Giloy tablets available at any Ayurveda store.
