At least seven people were killed in a shooting outside a synagogue in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.

Jerusalem:

At least seven people were killed in a shooting outside a synagogue in Israel’s annexed East Jerusalem on Friday, police and medical workers said, while the gunman died at the scene.

“At around 8:30 pm (1830 GMT) this evening, a terrorist arrived at a synagogue on Neve Yaakov Boulevard in Jerusalem and opened fire on several people in the area,” said a police statement.

It added, “Police forces immediately rushed to the spot, engaged with the terrorist and opened fire on him. The terrorist was gunned down.”

A police spokesman told AFP that seven people had been killed.

Police were at the scene destroying a white vehicle believed to have belonged to the shooter.

“This is a very serious terrorist attack,” said Fadi Dekidek, a paramedic at Magen David Adom Emergency Response Agency.

The MDA reported a total of 10 people shot, including a 70-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy.

“I heard a lot of gunshots,” Mattanel Almlem, an 18-year-old student who lives near the synagogue, told AFP at the scene.
