‘85% of people take their first dose of vaccine’

Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Sundararajan said on Wednesday that an estimated 85% of the target population has been covered in a single dose of vaccination against COVID-19.

Ms. Sundararajan, who inaugurated a vaccination camp at Kavikuyil street, told reporters that so far 58 per cent of the population has been given both doses.

He said immunization for the 15-17 age group is happening rapidly and coverage of an estimated 83,000 adolescents is expected to be completed in a few days.

‘Follow the schedule’

In view of the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the third wave, the Lt Governor appealed to the public to maintain COVID-19-appropriate behavior and follow the vaccination schedule.

He said that despite various efforts of the administration to facilitate vaccination, about one lakh people are refraining from going even for the first time. Emphasizing that vaccination is the only protection against the severity of COVID-19, he urged the non-vaccinated people not to delay taking it further.

Later, the Lieutenant Governor met Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in Chennai.

A press note from Raj Niwas said the minister appreciated the Union Territory’s COVID-19 prevention efforts and vaccination measures.
