88-year-old man from Punjab’s Derabassi wins ₹5 crore lottery

An overnight change of fortune sounds too filmy to happen in real life, but for 88-year-old Mahant Dwarka Das, a resident of Trivedi Camp in Derabassi, luck knocked on his door as a man from a very modest background won Rs. 5 crore lottery on Wednesday

After the news became public there was a wave of celebration in his area and people flocked to his house to congratulate him and even garland him.

Things changed for Dwarka Das when he bought 5 Crore Lohri Makar Sankranti Bumper Lottery. He had bought the lottery ticket from Zirakpur and is expected to get around after tax deduction 3.5 crores.

Lokesh, who sells lottery tickets, expressed his happiness that a person from such a humble background has won such a huge prize money.

“His grandson Nikhil Sharma came to me and said that his grandfather wanted a lottery ticket with specific numbers on it. I gave him the ticket and he won the mega bumper. I am very happy that I sold a ticket to a family whose life will change a lot,” Lokesh said.

The family members and other close associates of Dwarka Das celebrated the occasion happily and also danced to the beat of the Dhol.

Mahant Dwarka Das migrated Pakistan With his family in 1947 at the age of 13. He was a frequent buyer of lottery tickets because he wanted to turn things around for his family and himself.

Das, who also looks after the local dera plan to donate half the amount to the dera and then distribute the remaining amount equally between his two sons.

“I used to buy lottery tickets every month hoping for a bumper prize one day. The money will now be used by my family. I worked hard all my life but never did anything wrong. We migrated from Pakistan in 1947 and I was 13 years old then,” recalled Mahant Dwarka.
