9 accused, worshiped after mob entered heritage madrassa in Karnataka

A mob storms into a mosque at Mohammed Gavan Madrasa, a heritage site in Bidri, Karnataka

Bidar, Karnataka:

Police have registered a case against nine people after a mob broke into the closed gate of Mohammed Gawan Madrasa, a mosque located inside the heritage site in Bidar, Karnataka.

According to the complainant Mohammad Shafiuddin, who is a member of a mosque committee, the incident took place when a procession was passing near the place in the early hours of Thursday.

A crowd of about 60 people broke the lock of the gate and entered the archaeologically important monument and raised slogans. It is alleged that ‘gulal’ was also thrown inside the premises.

When the mob raised an alarm, the security personnel posted there also threatened.

Reacting to the incident, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted that “extremists” tried to desecrate the heritage monument.

“Visions of the historic Mahmood Gawan Mosque & Madrasa, Bidar, #Karnataka (October 5). Extremists broke the lock of the gate and tried to desecrate,” alleged Mr. Owaisi on his Twitter handle.

In his complaint, Shafiuddin said the mob had “intention to create peace, harmony and violence” in this district headquarters town. He said that such people have been active for a long time. They put up idols or photographs in the premises and entered religious and government monuments, he said.

“It has also been brought to your notice that these people are raising slogans against the country and trying to provoke other communities,” Shafiuddin alleged in his complaint.

He also appealed to the police to make charges under the stringent anti-terror law ‘Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act’ or UAPA.

Police said they have tightened security around the madrasa following the tension following the incident.
