A day after quitting as Punjab Congress president, Sidhu heaps praise on Mann, praising ‘new anti-mafia era’

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had recently resigned as Punjab Congress chief following the party’s dismal performance in the state, on Thursday heaped praise on newly-sworn Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and said the AAP leader has done a great job in the state. The ‘New Anti-Mafia’ era has begun.

Sidhu, known to be regularly involved in controversies, said he hoped Mann would bring Punjab back on the path of revival with pro-people policies. The Aam Aadmi Party dealt a devastating blow to the Congress rule in the state by winning 92 out of 117 seats in the state.

“The happiest man is the one from whom no one expects… Bhagwant Mann ushered in a new anti-mafia era in Punjab with a mountain of expectations… always the best,” Sidhu said in a tweet.

After the Congress’s defeat in Punjab, Sidhu had said that he had “humbly” accepted the mandate of the people. “The voice of the people is the voice of God… Accept the mandate of the people of Punjab humbly….Congratulations to you!!!” He had said.

After the party’s defeat in the recently held assembly elections in five states, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday asked her state unit chiefs in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur to tender their resignations. The Congress was expected to be a major contender in what was expected to be a multi-cornered fight in the state assembly elections. But it was defeated by the AAP, which won 92 of the total 117 assembly seats.

The state of Punjab, which was earlier under Congress rule, saw massive fighting between Navjot Singh Sidhu and the then CM Captain Amarinder Singh, who was later replaced with Charanjit Singh Channi.

However, the party has now faced criticism over its dismal performance, with several party leaders including Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot blaming Congress infighting for it. The grand old party saw a significant drop in vote share as compared to the 2017 elections, even as Congress chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi lost both the seats.

Sidhu had joined the Congress in January 2017. He won the Amritsar East constituency by a margin of over 42,000 votes in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections.

When he joined the Congress, Sidhu said that he was a “born Congressman” who went back to his roots. In 2019, he resigned from the Punjab cabinet amid a tussle with the then Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Sidhu posted a copy of his resignation on Twitter on 14 July, claiming that it was submitted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on 10 June.

In July 2021, he was appointed as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Sunil Jakhar. However, in September last year, he resigned as the chairman of the committee, but his resignation was rejected by the high command.
