With digital payments booming in India, a beggar in Bihar seems to have taken notes, and now walks around with a QR code placard wrapped around his neck, so that people can make e-payments instead of cash. A 40-year-old man begging for alms at Bihar’s Bettiah railway station gives people an option to pay through digital mode. He also carries a digital tablet with him to check whether the payment has been received in his e-wallet.

Digital beggar Raju Patel, who claims to be a follower of former state chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and attends his programs, is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India campaign. The digital beggar said that he never forgets to listen to PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme.

While talking to ANI, Raju Patel said, “I accept digital payments, and that is enough to complete the work and feed my stomach. I have been begging here since childhood but I have decided to beg in this digital age.” The way has changed.”

“After begging, I sleep at the station itself. I could not find any other way of livelihood. At times, people refused to give alms saying they did not have cash in small denominations. Many passengers said that In the age of e- wallets like pay-phones etc., there is no need to carry cash now. Due to this, I opened a bank account and an e-wallet,” he said.

He also claimed that while most people continue to give them cash, they also receive payments in their e-wallets. He told that the bank needed his Aadhaar and PAN card to open a bank account, so he also got his PAN made. He has an account open in State Bank of India.
