Form of words:

New Delhi: Dynastic parties are a matter of concern to those committed to the Constitution and are against the spirit of democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a Constitution Day function in Parliament on Friday.

Modi also paid tribute to the security personnel who lost their lives in the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2008.

“Dynastic parties are a matter of concern for the people committed to the Constitution. Look at the dynastic political parties from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, it is against the democratic spirit.

Pointing to the Congress, he said, “If a party is run by one family for generations and the entire party system is with one family, it is the biggest problem for a healthy democracy.”

He also said that the constitutional spirit gets hurt when political parties lose their democratic character.

The event, organized as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence, was boycotted by the opposition parties.

Modi, however, said that the function was not organized by the government but by an institution.
