In a horrifying and deeply misogynistic turn of events, hundreds of men in Germany recently opined that “acceptable” to use violence with their female partners. The study commissioned by a children’s charity also found that 34% of the respondents (nearly 350 of the surveyed men) had been violent towards women in the past to “instil respect in them”. Others still voiced a dislike for public displays of homosexuality and said they would not want a relationship with women who have had several sexual partners.
1,000 men and 1,000 women aged between 18 and 35 were surveyed to arrive at these data points. The details of the study commissioned by Plan International Germany were slated to be published by the Funke newspaper group on Monday. According to the details shared, a total of 33% of men aged 18-35 said they found it “acceptable” if “their hand slipped” occasionally during an argument with their female partner.
Meanwhile 50% of men said they would not want a relationship with a woman who had had many sexual partners. 20% of the surveyed women also agreed with this viewpoint.
The study also appeared to uphold some deep rooted gender stereotypes with 52% of the men convinced that their job was to be the primary provider while their partner ran the household. More than two-thirds of the surveyed women however disagreed, voicing support for equal partnerships and shared decision-making.
Just under half of respondents also expressed a dislike for seeing public displays of homosexuality, saying they felt “disturbed” by it.
