Clearly reticent and borderline apologetic about his work, Abhishek Bachchan has decided not to be completely apologetic about his latest, daswick, Why? Because, to him, it’s more than just a movie — and a potential catalyst for change.

When we spoke a few days back, Bachchan had just watched the social comedy and was very excited. “I loved it. It touched me, and that’s what a movie should do,” he says. For him, it’s an emotional experience that can’t be quantified or categorized. “You just want to watch the movie and want to live in that world, and I hope it has an impact on you and your readers alike,” he says.

None of the bracket films, he reluctantly agrees that Bollywood usually makes films that are either purely entertainment or films with a message. But they have to be “a mix of all” – to entertain, and enrich audiences. daswick Pass it well. He says that there is a “learning” at the end of the film, in order not to “find it too much”, which is not clear, but is done through a very entertaining process.

Debutant director Tushar Jalota’s film is not a commentary on whether politicians should be educated, but the journey of a man who realizes that education can open up a world of opportunities. He wants to study 10th class even if he is from jail.

Bachchan acknowledged the difficulty of discussing the film without making it didactic, “But it really isn’t!” He insists. For the actor, the biggest learning from his character Gangaram Choudhary is that “you have to change” – you can’t be set in your ways because there’s a bigger world waiting to be discovered. Bachchan, 46, describes the character as a political beast, for whom manipulating the system “runs in his blood.” But he’s also a cute badass. Ganga is a Jat, a community that the Bachchans know through their Kabaddi team. “They are fat, tough people, but very emotional at heart”, a trait he tried to imbibe in his character.

Bachchan’s last two films (financial and crime thriller bob biswas And The Big Bull) were intense, so when the role came to him he was looking for something lighter. He has portrayed Ganga in a way that is real and relatable. But it took some preparation to bring the ugly character to life. He spent six to eight weeks working exclusively on body language and the Haryanvi dialect. The biggest challenge was the latter, he admits, and took two months of training with a coach on set.

Construction daswick It was a collaborative process. Every scene was rehearsed and thoroughly discussed the night before the shoot. Jalota put a lot of faith in the actors, which according to Bachchan, a director should do. “You hired them for a reason,” he says.

Yami Gautam plays Ganga’s jailer, and Bachchan likes the symbolism of David and Goliath that comes naturally when they share a frame. “Ganga’s biggest opposition and obstacle is physically the smallest thing they’ve possibly seen,” he shares. He says working with Gautam and co-star Nimrat Kaur has made him “a more prosperous actor”.

Glocal is the new reality

Whereas daswick Designed for the big screen, Bachchan is not disappointed that it is being released on Netflix and JioCinema – it brings with it the promise of reaching more people. For them, the advent of streaming makes the present a very exciting time to become a content creator. He has done three films in the last two and a half years, and the show Breathe: In the Shadows, “Where do you get to do that kind of work and get away with it?” He laughs.
