Nikita Mazepin will be ruled out of the Formula One race at the end of the season after testing positive for COVID-19. Haas will drive just one car for Mick Schumacher at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday. Reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi was not eligible to replace Mazepin as Fittipaldi had not driven in at least one session this weekend.

Mezpin tested positive on site at the Yas Marina circuit. A second test also came back positive for dandruff.

The Haas team said Mazepin is asymptomatic but will self-isolate and follow “relevant public health officials”.

“Nikita is fine physically,” Haas said. “Uralkali Haas F1 Team wishes Nikita well and we look forward to his return to the race track for pre-season testing in early 2022.”

Mazepin is in his first F1 season and the Russian had a career-best 14th in Hungary. That was due to start on Sunday the 20th.
