Adani eyeing infrastructure ventures in Sri Lanka

After a meeting with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Chairman Gautam Adani said that the Adani Group will explore infrastructure partnerships in Sri Lanka, in addition to developing the Colombo Port terminal.

“Had the privilege of meeting President @GotabayaR and PM @PresRajapaksa. Apart from developing Colombo Port’s Western Container Terminal, the Adani Group will explore other infrastructure partnerships. India’s strong bonds with Sri Lanka stem from centuries-old historic ties,” Mr Adani tweeted on Tuesday, referring to the group’s $700 million port-terminal deal with a local partner and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority of the same name.

Colombo sources said Mr Adani, who held a private meeting with President Gotabaya on Monday, met Prime Minister Mahinda on Tuesday.

Local media quoted Ceylon Electricity Board officials as saying that a team from the Indian group visited the northern Mannar district to inspect the wind power farm.

The top Indian businessman’s visit to Colombo comes less than a month after Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla visited when bilateral talks included potential cooperation in the energy sector. President Gotabaya has said that his government will make sustainable-energy development a ‘high priority’ with the aim of using renewable sources for 70% of the country’s energy needs by 2030. In addition, Mr. Rajapaksa has sought investments rather than loans. To develop the country’s economy which is facing the worst recession in decades.
