Mysuru: A month after the vaccination campaign for teenagers began in Karnataka, health department officials in parts of the old Mysore region are doing their best to dodge the juvenile horde with their second dose.
This follows a directive from the Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary Rajesh Bhushan To expedite the second dose coverage among the beneficiaries in the age group of 15 to 18 years and to take time bound measures for first dose vaccination to the remaining beneficiaries.
The COVID vaccination campaign for the 15-18 years group was launched on 3 January. So far, 46 million first doses have been administered in India in less than a month, with a total coverage of 63%.
A second dose of Covaxin is given after an interval of 28 days or four weeks. At least 42 lakh beneficiaries, who have received their first dose on January 3, are eligible to receive the second dose from January 31. The Ministry has said that timely completion of the COVID vaccination schedule is critical to provide complete vaccine protection to the recipients. It has directed to review the progress daily at the state and local level.
RCHO Dr MS Jayant, who is the Mysore District Nodal Immunization Officer, told TOI that the administration of the second dose of COVID vaccination to the beneficiaries in the age group of 15-18 years has started from February 1. “The response from the adolescent beneficiaries has been good and we are hopeful of achieving the target set in the stipulated time,” the official said.
Mysore has identified 1.4 lakh beneficiaries across age groups and in the last one month, around 1.2 lakh have received the vaccine – achieving 87.2% of the target. “We have vaccinated 8,300 beneficiaries in two days, many of whom are voluntarily coming to the centres,” Jayant said.
Doctor Visvesvaraya KMThe District Health Officer of Chamarajanagar district said that the campaign to encourage the beneficiaries to take the second dose has just begun. “Around 1,512 adolescents have now been fully vaccinated in the district. Chamarajanagar has 40,000 beneficiaries aged between 15-18 years and about 74% of them have been partially vaccinated. We have tried our best to motivate him to take another dose. Our staff is contacting and encouraging the beneficiaries for their second dose over the telephone,” he said.
The health officials of Hassan district have also geared up to immunize the eligible beneficiaries with their second dose. DHO Dr. Satish Kumar KM He said that the district has achieved 74 percent progress in giving the first dose of vaccine. “While many students studying in Class 9, who are as young as 14, have also been included in the list, the target has been high, leading to some challenges in vaccination coverage,” the official said.
