Afghan women footballers brought to Qatar from Afghanistan

Qatar worked with FIFA to expel players, including some players from the national team

The Qatari government said the women’s football players were evacuated from Afghanistan on a flight to Doha on Thursday.

“About 100 football players and their families, including female players, are on board,” Qatar’s Assistant Foreign Minister Lolwah Al Khattar tweeted.

Qatar worked closely with FIFA, including some players from the national team, who were moved to a compound along with other evacuees to undergo coronavirus tests. It is not clear how long they will remain in Qatar.

The international players’ union, FIFPRO, helped secure seats for players of the Afghanistan women’s national team on a flight out of Kabul in August.

Concerns for the safety of female athletes were raised after the United States in August fell much faster than publicly anticipated, allowing the Taliban to take back control of Kabul after 20 years.
