Afghanistan’s last Jew left the country

The last member of Afghanistan’s Jewish community has left the country.

Zebulon Sementov, who lived in a dilapidated synagogue in Kabul, kept kosher and prayed in Hebrew, enduring decades of warfare.

But it seems the Taliban takeover last month was the last straw. Moti Kahana, an Israeli-American who organized the evacuation, said they had been taken to a “neighboring country”.

Mr Kahana said Mr Sementov, who had previously been under Taliban rule, was not worried about him. But Mr. Kahana warned him that he was in danger of being kidnapped or murdered by the far more radical Islamic State group. He said Mr. Sementov’s neighbors also pressured him to leave, so that his children could accompany him on the bus. They joined the exodus of thousands of Afghans who have fled since the Taliban swept the country.

Mr Kahana said his group is reaching out to US and Israeli officials to find a permanent home for Mr Sementov, whose wife and children live in Israel.
