Special Public Prosecutors (SPP) Amit Prasad and Madhukar Pandey appeared in the court on behalf of the Delhi Police, while Advocate Javed Hussain represented Poonawalla as legal aid counsel. SPP Prasad, while detailing the chain of events on the day of the alleged murder on May 18 last year, said that Walker had returned from Gurgaon to her residence in Chhatarpur around 2 pm and a neighbor found her having a heated argument with Poonawalla around 6.30 pm. “Soon thereafter at 6.40 and 6.42 pm, the entire amount (Rs 54,000) was wiped out from Walker’s bank account and transferred to Poonawalla’s account,” the SPP said. He said that on May 18 itself, Poonawalla bought three knives, a saw, a chopper and a garbage bag, while the next day he bought a double door refrigerator. Subsequently, Poonawalla interacted with several people on Walker’s social media accounts “to show that she was alive,” Prasad said, adding that after Poonawalla’s arrest, jawbones, bones and hair were recovered from the accused’s target. Underlining that Poonawalla was a “trained cook” and knew how to cut and preserve meat, the SPP said he had used disinfectant, deodorizer and incense sticks along with dry ice (to preserve Walker’s body). The SPP said that Poonawalla and Walker had a “sour relationship” and that Walker had suffered physical abuse. Citing the charge sheet, he said that Walker had expressed apprehension on November 23, 2020 that he would be killed and hacked to pieces by Poonawalla and the exact pattern was followed on May 18, 2022.
Prasad also said that the evidence showed that the couple was facing financial problems and had to think twice before spending money on their regular expenses. The court said that arguments on the charges were heard and a brief summary was filed by the prosecution.
Noting that the counsel for the legal aid had sought time to address the arguments, the court posted the matter for further proceedings on March 20.
