After 13 days, the mercury dropped below 40 degrees

Delhiites got respite from the scorching sun with cloudy skies on Tuesday taking the mercury below 40 degrees Celsius after a gap of 13 days.

The maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 39.6 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this time of the year.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light rain has been predicted for every day of this week. The mercury is likely to drop during the week and settle at 35 degree Celsius by Sunday.

The Met department said “very light rain” is likely on Wednesday, with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius.

Generally cloudy sky and light rain are expected in the city from Thursday to Sunday.

Heat wave conditions prevailed in some parts of Delhi till Monday and the maximum temperature was recorded at 43.7 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.

For plains, a ‘heatwave’ is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 °C. According to the IMD, if the departure from normal temperature is more than 6.4 degrees, a ‘severe heat wave’ is declared.
