After defeat after defeat, new faces work to strengthen Bengal BJP amid growing popularity of Mamata

After the debacle in the assembly elections in West Bengal, the state unit of the BJP on Wednesday announced a new list of 72 committee members, which include morcha presidents, in-charges and co-in-charges of various departments of the party.

After Sukanta Majumdar replaced Dilip Ghosh as West Bengal BJP president, an organizational change was needed. The party was seeing a large number of leaders, MPs and workers moving to the ruling TMC, putting the party leadership on the backfoot.

In a bid to capture the fort in West Bengal amid rising popularity of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, BJP national president JP Nadda has given the responsibility of strengthening the party across the state to six MPs and 10 MLAs.

The most significant organizational change in the list is the induction of two new MLAs as general secretary and six new legislators as secretaries. This is probably the first time that the state BJP has entrusted a big responsibility to the new faces.

One of the two new MLAs to become general secretary is Deepak Barman, who is the Falakata MLA from Alipurduar. Burman was a surprise pick as he did not hold any party post earlier, and now the party has decided to portray him as the Rajbanshi face of North Bengal.

Noted fashion designer and Asansol South MLA Agnimitra Paul was also promoted as General Secretary. She was the president of Mahila Morcha. The party appointed Tanuja Chakraborty as the new Mahila Morcha president.

Six new MLAs have been given the post of secretary: Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh, old Malda MLA Gopal Saha, Murshidabad MLA Gauri Shankar Ghosh, Pursura (Hooghly district) MLA Biman Ghosh, West Durgapur MLA Laxman Chandra Ghorui and Moyna. (East Midnapore) MLA. MLA Ashok Bhimchandra Dinda.

Nadda has also chosen six MPs, including Arjun Singh, Jagannath Sarkar, Khagen Murmu, Saumitra Khan, Locket Chatterjee and Jyotirmoy Singh Mahto, for the responsibility of strengthening the party cadre in Bengal.

Another notable change is the elevation of MP Saumitra Khan from youth president to state vice-president. The party has appointed Dr Indranil Khan as the new Yuva Morcha President.

Considering the vote share of Jangalmahal/Scheduled Tribe (which went to TMC in the assembly elections), BJP made Jewel Murmu (Habibpur MLA from Nadia district) as the ST Morcha President. Earlier MP Khagen Murmu was the president of ST Morcha, but he was promoted to the post of vice-president.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all the seats of Junglemahal including Purulia, Midnapore, Vishnupur of Bankura and Jhargram went to BJP’s account. But in the last assembly election, however, the Adivasi/Matua vote share went to the TMC, forcing the BJP to undergo an organizational change, leading MPs and MLAs from the ST and Matua community (Jagannath Sarkar is now the vice-president) to the new state. Committee list.

Surprisingly, BJP’s old-timer Sayantan Basu was removed from the post of general secretary, while his colleague Anindya Banerjee, better known as Raju Banerjee, was promoted as vice-president.

Advocate Priyanka Tibrewal, who contested against Mamta from Bhawanipur, has also been made secretary.

Pratap Banerjee, Jayaprakash Majumdar, Vishwapriya Roy Chowdhury and Ritesh Tiwari were removed from the post of vice-president.

A senior party leader said, “The organizational change was necessary as the party was on the back foot due to a large number of workers/party leaders/MLAs/MPs changing camps. We are aware of the challenges in Bengal given Mamata Banerjee’s politics and the recent setbacks in assembly and civic elections. That is why Nadda ji has indicated 10 MLAs and six MPs to handle the ship in Bengal. After poor performance in tribal areas and Matua-dominated areas, the party has strategically introduced Deepak Burman and Jagannath Sarkar to strengthen the party base among them.

“In January, our party president JP Nadda will be in Kolkata to personally interact with the new committee members and brief them about the way forward in Bengal,” the leader said.

Sukanta Majumdar is in New Delhi to attend the party meeting on December 23, which will be chaired by Nadda.
