After disqualification from UP Assembly, Abdullah Azam Khan’s name removed from Rampur voter list

Abdullah Azam Khan was on Wednesday disqualified as a member of the Legislative Assembly after a court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a 15-year-old case.

SP leader Abdullah Azam Khan’s name was removed from the voter list of Rampur assembly constituency, days after he was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, an election official said.

Abdullah Azam Khan was on Wednesday disqualified as a member of the Legislative Assembly after a court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a 15-year-old case.

The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Rampur assembly constituency took the decision following a demand by Akash Saxena, BJP MLA from Rampur, to remove the name of Abdullah Azam Khan from the voter list, a statement said on Friday.

In his order, ERO Nirankar Singh said that the application submitted by Saxena states that the membership of Abdullah Azam Khan has been terminated under the Representation of the People Act. Also requested to remove his name from the voter list.

“As per the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, the name of any person who becomes so disqualified after registration shall forthwith be deleted from the electoral roll in which it is included.

The order states, “This provision makes it clear that after being disqualified, the name of Abdullah Azam Khan shall be immediately struck off from the voter’s list.”

Abdullah Azam Khan, son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, represented Swar in Rampur district in the assembly.

“Abdullah Azam Khan has been disqualified following a Moradabad court order after he was sentenced to two years (in jail) in a 15-year-old case. His seat has been declared vacant since February 13,” a senior official of the UP Assembly had said.

Abdullah Azam Khan was convicted along with his father under section 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for staging a sit-in on a state highway on January 29, 2008 Went. In the wake of the attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur on December 31, 2007, the police had stopped his convoy for checking.

He was disqualified earlier in 2020 after the Allahabad High Court nullified his election to the assembly. His previous disqualification was effective from December 16, 2019.
