The controversy started when the Pakistani handle of carmaker Hyundai posted a tweet expressing support for the “struggle of Kashmiri brothers”.
Pakistan observes the so-called “Kashmir Solidarity Day” on 5 February.
Quick service restaurant (QSR) chains KFC and Pizza Hut as well as the Pakistani handle of Kia Motors had posted tweets with a similar message.
Soon after the tweet, outrage broke out on social media with hundreds of users in India calling for a boycott of these brands.
Dozens of Indians posted an intention to cancel orders for Hyundai cars to punish the company, urging support for domestic brands such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Users also called for a boycott of KFC and Pizza Hut.

Responding to the uproar, the companies’ Indian partners went into damage control mode.

Hyundai’s India unit said it has a “zero tolerance policy towards insensitive communications and we strongly condemn any such idea”.
“Unwanted social media posts linking Hyundai Motor India to this great country are insulting our unparalleled commitment and service,” said @HyundaiIndia, adding that it stands firmly behind a “strong ethos of respecting nationalism”.
KFC apologized for the post and said that it respects and respects India.

According to a message on the official account of KFC India, “We deeply apologize for a post published on certain KFC social media channels outside the country. We respect and honor India, and do our best to serve all Indians. Stand firm in commitment.” Twitter.
Ashwini Mahajan, an official of the RSS’s economic wing, said Hyundai should clarify its position on Kashmir.
He said, “Hyundai not criticizing Pakistan Indian branch of @Hyundai_Global is also not saying that Kashmir is an integral part of India. Speaks a lot about its commitment to India. Isn’t this a call for #BoycottHyundai does?”, he said.
