After stampede concerns, regional government peeps into public meetings, bans rallies

The concerned state government has banned holding of public meetings and rallies on national highways including strolling. This order has been cited for public safety. Last week, Kandukuru came to the fore after a stampede at a rally of the main opposition Desam Party. In which eight people had died. At the same time, after this incident, now this order has been issued by the government. This prohibitory order was issued late night under the Police Act, 1861.

The government said in its order, “Police Act for holding public meetings in public roads and streets is a subject of regulation under Section 30 of 1861.” The system has been asked to “identify places that are away from public display for public meetings, so that there is no traffic, pollution of people, authorization services, authorization of essential goods, etc.”

The Principal Secretary said, “The authorities should refrain from giving permission for public meetings on public occasions. Only in rare and exceptional circumstances, permission for public gatherings may be considered and the reasons for the same should be recorded in writing.

Referring to the Kandukuru incident that took place on December 28, he said that “Holding public road and roadside meetings puts people’s lives at risk and also directs traffic.” He said the police need to deal with the situation.
