AIIMS in Madurai to be ready in two years, says CEO

Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director M. Hanumantha Rao said on Monday that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Thoppur in Madurai would be ready in about two years from now.

The top official, who arrived here to be a part of the inaugural session of the first batch of 50 MBBS students admitted to AIIMS Madurai, said classes on the fifth floor will continue to be temporarily held till the permanent building is constructed at Thoppur. Ramanathapuram Government Medical College and Hospital.

Dr. Hanumantha Rao thanked the Government of Tamil Nadu for easily providing space for classrooms, laboratories, dining hall and hostel for boys and girls in its campus and said that the construction of permanent buildings at Thoppur for two years is expected. Instead of waiting, the AIIMS management had decided to start classes from this year itself.

Asked about the delay in starting the academic program for the first year students, he said it would be compensated by conducting extra classes on weekends. “We have eight faculties immediately for AIIMS Madurai. They will handle Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-Chemistry and Community Medicine respectively. In addition, six faculty members from Mangalagiri in Andhra Pradesh will also be inducted. Online classes will also be made available for the students,” he clarified.

The CEO said that the AIIMS at Thoppur, near Madurai, will come up on over 200 acres. It will have 750 beds. Construction will start in about six months from now. The first and second batch of MBBS students will be here temporarily. After that, they will be shifted to Thoppur campus, he said.

Very soon, AIIMS Madurai will call candidates for appointment to various posts as the institute has a sanctioned strength of 183 faculty members. In about two to three months, the process will be completed, Dr Hanumantha Rao said and added that apart from 750 beds, AIIMS in Madurai has a special block with 150 beds to treat infectious diseases and another to deal with cancer. There will also be a block. Patient – tertiary care.
