AIMIM President Owaisi announces three candidates for Gujarat Assembly elections

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday evening announced his party’s candidates for three seats for the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat. Elections in the BJP-ruled state are yet to be announced, expected to be held by December.

Sabir Kabaliwala, President of Alli’s state unit India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen will contest from Jamalpur-Khadia in Ahmedabad, Owaisi announced while addressing a gathering in Juhapura area here. The party’s Dalit face Kaushika Parmar will contest from Danilimda (SC) seat in Ahmedabad, while Wasim Qureshi will contest from Surat-East. The Jamalpur-Khadia and Danilimda seats are currently with the Congress while Surat-East is with the ruling BJP.

In 2012, Kabaliwala, a former Congressman, contested from Jamalpur-Khadia, which has about 60 percent of the Muslim population, as an independent after being denied a ticket by the Congress. BJP’s Bhushan Bhatt won due to a possible split of votes between Kabaliwala and Congress’s Samir Khan Pathan.

In 2017 he withdrew his candidature in support of Congress candidate Imran Khedawala, who had won the election. In his speech, Owaisi termed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent visit to a mosque and madrasa in Delhi as a “new drama by the BJP and the RSS”. “Can he (Gujarat riot victim) meet Bilkis Bano and tell him that he will ensure justice to him? The people who raped her and killed many others were freed by the BJP government in Gujarat. Will Bhagwat go and meet him? No, he will not,” Owaisi said.

He said Bhagwat had gone to a madrassa in Delhi, the BJP government in Assam is demolishing madrassas and the Uttar Pradesh government has started a survey of madrassa and waqf properties to “snatch away such properties”.
