Air passenger carrying diamonds worth Rs 5.76 cr arrested in Chennai

The customs department said on Wednesday that diamonds worth about Rs 6 crore, which were in the attempted smuggling, have been recovered and an air passenger has been arrested in this connection.

Acting on specific information, officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Chennai Customs intercepted the Dubai-bound passenger on Tuesday, an official release said.

“Upon checking his baggage, 22 small transparent plastic packets containing processed diamonds were hidden in the telescopic handle of his hand baggage. The stroller suitcase was found and recovered. The passenger did not declare the diamonds under the Baggage Rules. tried to smuggle him out of the country,” the release said.

Under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, diamonds worth Rs 5.76 crore (1052.72 carats) were seized, the passenger was arrested, the release said.
