Airports to attract ₹90,000 cr in investment in five years: Civil Aviation Secretary

Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said a total investment of Rs 90,000 crore would be made for airports over a five-year period beginning in 2020-21.

‘Private sector will invest’

Of the total amount, around ₹20,000- ₹22,000 crore will be invested by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), while the remaining amount of around ₹68,000 crore will be from the private sector, he said.

The government expects to have 220 operational airports, including heliports, in five years. At present, there are 136 operational airports in the country, and several airports are under construction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the new airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

A new airport at Mopa in Goa is expected to be ready next year, and an airport is also under construction in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

In addition, expansion work has been started at airports in Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
