Aishwarya Lakshmi talks about her performances in ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, ‘Godse’ and ‘Kanekaane’

Last seen in Tamil in Dhanush-starrer ‘Jagame Thanthiram’, Aishwarya Lakshmi talks about returning to Malayalam cinema after a hiatus and working with Tovino Thomas in ‘Kaanekaane’.

“Real but nice!” Says Aishwarya Lakshmi who is back after a hiatus during the lockdown last year. His last outing in Malayalam was in 2019 Brothers Day. She returns to Malayalam cinema with the recently released film Kanekkane, Manu Ashokan’s sleeper hit streaming on SonyLIV.

As a guilt-ridden woman trying to find happiness in her marriage, Aishwarya’s performance is spot on. The doctor-turned-actor is currently pursuing a dream in Tamil and Malayalam, while she is making her Telugu debut. Godse Gopi Ganesh with Pattabhi.

“I am very happy with the way people appreciated my character. kanekkane. Such scripts do not come to you everyday. As an actor, you crave characters with essence and affection [in Kaanekkaane] Were there so many aspects to his personality,” she says.

In kanekkane, Aishwarya worked closely with him Mayanadhi: Tovino Thomas, who co-stars in the role of Allen. She admits that her close friends, with whom she discusses films and her scripts, had objections about playing Allen’s second wife, Sneha. He felt that, as the second woman in Allen’s marriage, Sneha had a chance to be treated as a ‘home breaker’. But Aishwarya decided to follow her gut realizing that it was a role in a lifetime and went ahead with the character.

“I know there was a risk in playing the role of Sneha but I believed in the subject and the content. Manu and the film’s screenwriters Bobby-Sanjay ensured that none of the characters were stereotyped. This helped Sneha appeal to the audience,” he believes.

Aishwarya yearns to work in Malayalam film though she is busy in Tamil.

Meanwhile, Aishwarya has just wrapped up work in Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ponniyin selvan, which is expected to release in 2022. Based on the eponymous classic, the film chronicles the life and times of Raja Raja Chola I. “Both the halves of the film were shot together. The shooting started with one of my scenes. But I can’t say anything about my role or the film. I was very nervous and excited to work in Mani Ratnam’s film. It took me some time to settle down because I was trying so hard to impress her. It also took time to get used to the big names I was working with,” she says.
