Ajit Pawar knocks on EC’s door, takes swipe at Sharad Pawar – Highlights

Newly appointed Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar took the NCP power tussle to the Election Commission on Wednesday, urging his uncle to retire. The senior politician has proclaimed himself NCP chief and stressed his desire to become Maharashtra CM.

Here are the latest developments rounded up:

  1. Both the Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions held meetings in Mumbai on Wednesday. As many as 32 of the 53 party’s MLAs attended the meeting called by the Ajit Pawar group, while 18 MLAs were present at the conclave addressed by the NCP chief.
  2. Ajit Pawar also urged his uncle to retire from active politics, insisting that he was ahead in the numbers game for control of NCP. “You are 83, aren’t you going to stop? Everybody has his innings. The most productive years are from 25 to 75 years. Give us your blessings and we will pray that you live a long life,” he said.
  3. “The party symbol is with us, it is not going anywhere. The people and party workers who brought us to power are with us,” Sharad Pawar countered at the meeting held by him at YB Chavan Auditorium.
  4. ‘Rebel’ group tells EC that Ajit Pawar was elected NCP president on June 30 via a resolution signed by an “overwhelming majority” of party members. According to the Ajit Pawar-led group, Praful Patel continues to be NCP working president. Sharad Pawar has rubbished assertions that this was not a working committee meeting.
  5. The Sharad Pawar camp has filed a caveat with the poll authority urging it to hear them first before passing any directive in connection with the factional fight.
  6. The EC is likely to process applications in the coming days and ask both the sides to exchange the respective documents submitted before it.
  7. Ajit Pawar has also said that he aspired to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra – remarks that are certain to unsettle CM Eknath Shinde, whose Sena-BJP coalition government completed one year last week.
