Akasa Air data breach: From notifying CERT-in to apologizing to customers and more

Akasa Air said it suffered a mega data breach involving the personal details of its passengers on Thursday. The details of the breach have been shared with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) team, the new entrant among domestic airlines informed on Sunday.

Akasa Air informed the security agency that the flight’s details such as name, gender, phone number and email ID had been leaked. The agency can now conduct a thorough investigation to go into the depth of the incident.

“This is to inform you that a temporary technical configuration error related to our login and sign-up service was reported on Thursday, August 25, 2022,” Akasa Air said.

“Upon becoming aware of the incident, we immediately stopped this unauthorized access by completely shutting down the relevant functional elements of our system. Subsequently, by adding additional controls to address this situation, we changed our login and sign-up services. has started again.”

Apart from notifying CERT-in, Akasa Air also sent emails to its passengers who had registered with the airline and shared their personal details.

“We reported the incident to CERT-In (which is the government-authorized nodal agency to deal with incidents of this nature). Despite having comprehensive protocols in place to prevent such incidents, we conducted additional reviews to ensure that the security of all our systems has been further enhanced,” Akasa Air’s mail read.

Although, akasa air It has been quick to mention that no confidential details of the fliers, such as travel records or payment information, were exposed during the leak. Akasa Air also assured its passengers that the security measures of its system will be reviewed soon and they will enhance them to avoid such lapses.

The airline previously discontinued login and sign-up for its service during this period, but has now been reintroduced to be available to new users.

It also apologized to its passengers for the error in the data and assured them that this would not happen again.

“At Akasa Air, the safety and security of customer information is of paramount importance, and our focus has always been to provide a safe and reliable customer experience. We are continually strengthening our systems, including working with experts and the research community to ensure We are strong,” it said. “We sincerely apologize to you for any inconvenience caused as a result of this incident.”

Akasa Air started its maiden journey on 7 August and its first service from Mumbai to Ahmedabad was operated using its newly hired Boeing B737 MAX aircraft.
