Akhilesh says SP stands with Azam Khan as party delegation did not give permission to go to Sitapur jail

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said that his party stands with senior party leader Azam Khan, who is lodged in Sitapur jail. His statement came after SP MLA Ravidas Mehrotra alleged that he was not allowed to meet Khan in the district jail.

Speaking to the media, Mehrotra made serious allegations against the jail administration, including Khan, of keeping the death row convicts in barracks. “Azam Khan is not feeling well and is currently sleeping. As part of the conspiracy, the BJP government has kept Azam Khan in jail for 26 months. There are minor cases registered against them. BJP can kill him in jail anytime. He (Azam Khan) has been kept in a barrack made for those prisoners who are given death sentence.”

Mehrotra had gone to meet Khan on the instructions of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. Denying reports of any disillusionment with the Samajwadi Party, Ravidas said, “Azam Khan has always been and will be with the SP. The party stands with Azam Khan and will continue to do so.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, while talking in favor of Azam Khan, has said that the party stands firmly with Azam Khan. Speaking to the media in Gosaiganj on Sunday, he said, “Samajwadi Party is with Azam Khan and the party will make efforts for his bail.” Asked about the SP delegation not being allowed to meet Khan in Sitapur jail, Yadav said, “I have no knowledge about it.”

Recently, media in-charge and Azam Khan’s close aide Fasahat Ali ‘Shanu’ accused the SP chief of ignoring Khan and alleged that the senior was left to die in jail. Several other Muslim leaders of SP had also raised questions on the functioning of the party of Sambhal MP Shafiq ur Rehman Barak.

SP chief Shivpal Yadav’s disgruntled uncle had recently met Azam Khan in jail and alleged that the SP leadership was not doing anything special for the jailed leader. Shivpal had also said that if Akhilesh had gone to protest in the Lok Sabha, PM Modi would have taken cognizance of the issue.
