After the removal of Shivpal Yadav, Naresh Uttam Patel became the UP state president of SP in 2017. It is being said that Naresh Uttam Patel is still the frontline contender for the post of UP President as he is considered Yadav’s confidante.

The Samajwadi Party may hold its state and national convention in October before Diwali, in which the national president of the SP Akhilesh Yadav Sources said he is likely to be re-elected for a third consecutive term.

Insiders claim that the exact date and venue of these conferences have not been announced yet, the party will also announce the SP UP president in these conferences.

Electoral defeat in the recently concluded 2022 Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections had forced Yadav to dissolve the party’s state executive. The party has recently launched a statewide membership drive to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. SP has set a target of 2 crore new members in this membership drive that ended on 30 September.

During the national and state level conventions of SP, an exercise will be done to instill enthusiasm among the workers before the upcoming local body elections.

Yadav was elected party president for the first time on January 1, 2017 in Lucknow, replacing SP founder and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. After this, Akhilesh was unanimously re-elected as the national president at the national convention held in Agra on 5 October 2017. For this the constitution of the party was amended and the tenure was increased to five years from the earlier three years.
