Algeria: Algeria increasingly aligning with Russia, says Spanish minister – Times of India

Calvino said he saw the growing relationship between Algeria and Russia at the International Monetary Fund’s spring meeting in April.
“I saw then that Algeria was more and more aligned with Russia, so this (the decision to suspend the treaty) did not surprise me,” Calvino said in an interview with Radio Catalunya.
The diplomatic row between the two countries follows a change in Spain’s stance on Western Sahara claiming Morocco, while Algeria backs a group that seeks its independence.
Spain is also a member of The European Union And this nato military alliance, both at the forefront of international opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Madrid has tried to persuade the North African country to back down after Algeria’s decision.
“I hope Algeria will reconsider its position and its statements,” Calvino told reporters in Barcelona.
Algeria is one of Spain’s main suppliers of gas and Spain has said it will protect its national interests and that of its citizens and companies.
Calvino reiterated Monday that gas supplies are continuing as normal and he is confident there will be no disruption.
