Amarinder Singh may meet PM Modi in Delhi today

Former Punjab Congress chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, sources told India TV. Singh was scheduled to meet PM Modi during his Delhi visit last week. But he returned without meeting the Prime Minister.

Sources said that Singh will talk to PM Modi on issues related to agricultural laws and border security. Singh had earlier written a letter to PM Modi on these issues.

Speculations are rife that Amarinder may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The politically important meeting started talks on his future course of action after resigning from the post of CM. Singh, however, denied joining the saffron party. According to Amarinder, he had discussed the long-running farmers’ agitation with Shah.

He tweeted, “Met Union Home Minister Amit Shah ji in Delhi. Discussed the long running farmers’ movement against agricultural laws and asked them to repeal the laws and ask them to support Punjab in diversification of crops, besides Urged to resolve the crisis immediately with MSP guaranteed. #NoFarmersNoFood,” he tweeted. 29 September.

Amarinder Singh had resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab on September 18 after months of tussle between him and Navjot Singh Sidhu. The development came a few months before the 2022 assembly elections.

Singh had accused the Congress of humiliating him, a charge vehemently denied by party leaders. There are also reports that Singh may start a political organization and his meeting with Shah was an indication that he is seeking BJP’s support.

Singh’s meeting with PM Modi is set to add another dimension to politics in Punjab, where no party is clearly seen as a favorite in the elections due early next year.
