Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced that schools up to class 10 will reopen in the state on Monday, February 14. All schools and colleges in Karnataka were closed for three days on February 9, amid an ongoing controversy over the wearing of hijab on campus by some students. Announcing the closure of the schools, the CM appealed to the students and all concerned to maintain peace and harmony in the society. The controversy started last month after hijab-wearing girl students at the Government Girls’ PU College in Udupi were barred from classes for wearing headscarves.

While girls were later allowed on the campus, other student groups opposing the hijab started protests in the college and other parts of the state. Protesters wearing saffron dupatta staged several protests.

Hearing a plea on the incident, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday said it would hear the matter again on Monday, but asked groups not to insist on wearing religious clothes (neither saffron fear nor hijab). Is. The HC also expressed concern over the closure of educational institutions due to the incident.

Meanwhile, a petition seeking transfer of the petition from the Karnataka HC to the Supreme Court for hearing in the Supreme Court was dismissed by the top court on Thursday. Refusing to interfere in the process, the SC bench observed that the HC was hearing the matter and did not want to interfere in the proceedings of the case.
