Hours before leaving his official residence, Thackeray offered to resign as Maharashtra CM and said he would be happy if a Shiv Sainik took his place. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said Thackeray would continue to be the chief minister of Maharashtra, and the ruling coalition MVA would prove its majority on the floor of the assembly if needed. Thackeray is not resigning from his post, he clarified.
He rubbished reports that NCP chief Sharad Pawar had asked Thackeray to make Shinde the chief minister to save the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Raut said that Pawar did not give any advice to Thackeray and said that the MVA will fight the political crisis together till the end.
Pawar, whose party is the second largest constituent of the Shiv Sena-led MVA, is the chief architect of the governing coalition, which took over in November 2019. Congress is also a part of MVA.
A group of rebel MLAs led by Shinde were taken to Guwahati on Wednesday morning and escorted to a luxury hotel amid tight security. A BJP source told news agency PTI that on Tuesday, the MLAs were moved from Mumbai to Surat and the decision to shift them to the Assam capital was taken on “security grounds”.
Shinde today claimed that he has the support of 34 MLAs of his party and in the evening passed a resolution reinstating himself as the leader of the Shiv Sena legislature party, a day after he was removed from the post by the Shiv Sena leadership. He also posted a tweet stating that the ruling MVA government was an “unnatural alliance” and it was imperative for the Shiv Sena to exit the alliance with the NCP and Congress for itself and the party workers.
Shinde and some MLAs had arrived at the Surat hotel on Monday night, hours after the Legislative Council elections in which the BJP won the fifth seat despite not having enough numbers in the assembly, possibly due to suspected cross-voting from the ruling bloc apart from support. .
