Kolhe and Dr Khan were members of a WhatsApp group called ‘Black-Freedom’, which had people from the veterinary and chemist fraternity as its members. Kolhe was one of the admins of the WhatsApp group, while Dr Khan was the only Muslim member of the group.

According to the NIA, Dr Khan was angered by Kolhe’s message openly supporting Nupur Sharma and decided to “revenge”. According to the agency, Dr Khan already had Kolhe’s mobile number in his contact list, so “he made changes to Kolhe’s saved contact number, replacing the second-last digit of ‘5’ with ‘2’”. and re-saved Kolhe’s mobile number in his contact list. As a result of this change, he was able to take a screenshot of the WhatsApp post displaying Kolhe’s contact number in place of his name. He then copied the screenshot of Kolhe’s post tagged and sent inflammatory messages and also circulated the screenshots in the ‘Kaleem Ibrahim WhatsApp group’ and several other persons at midnight to avenge the victim’s post for supporting Nupur Sharma,” the NIA said.

Shoaib, Dr. Khan and Ahmed decide to take up the task, while Irrfan Khan decides to help in any way he can.

The agency said that, “Thus the accused persons, to avenge the alleged insult to the Prophet of Islam, formed a terrorist gang led by Irfan Khan and killed Umesh Kolhe to create terror in the heart and mind of Gen.” ” People who supported Nupur Sharma’s statement.”

Dr. Khan showed Shoaib the location of Kolhe’s medical store, the route taken by Kolhe daily and other details. It was here that Ghantaghar Lane in Amravati was fixed as the murder site.

As per the chargesheet, Irrfan Khan engaged Mushtafique Ahmed, who is the cleric of the Transport Nagar mosque in Amravati and a member of the Tablighi Jamaat. Both Ahmed and Irrfan Khan were unhappy with the police response when they demanded registration of an FIR against Nupur Sharma. “Ahmed wanted some drastic action in Amravati and hence entered into the conspiracy and agreed to kill Kolhe and thus became a part of the terrorist gang,” the NIA said.

After the plan failed on June 20, all the accused met later in the day and nabbed vegetable vendor Mudassir Ahmed and driver Shah Rukh Khan. These accused had threatened the people supporting Nupur Sharma on social media. The agency had recorded statements of people who had been threatened by the accused and had deleted their social media accounts, taken leave from work and moved out of Amravati for a fortnight, later learned that in the meantime Kolhe had been murdered.
