Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham hosts ‘AlgoQueen’, a coding competition for girl students across the country

Women’s participation in technological innovation and all areas of business is at an all-time high today. This has resulted in an increase of high-profile female executives in the industry, with several recent studies highlighting their leadership abilities and the growth in demand for the female workforce. Hence, the need of the hour is to encourage more and more girls to pursue technology related opportunities as well as acquire the necessary technical skills to excel in such jobs.

Amrita University, which has been ranked 4th in India by the National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) and accredited with A++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has launched a one of its kind competitive programming competition, which is called. AlgoQueen to encourage coding for girls across the country. The objective of the AlgoQueen Coding Competition is to promote a culture of competitive programming and coding among girl students. As a part of this innovative and progressive initiative, Amrita will be hosting a series of competitions sponsored by Amazon Web Services, IBM Q and JetBrains. During the first two quarters, students will take part in a series of online examinations, consisting of four rounds of questions based on C, C++, Java and Python, followed by an onsite round depending on the pandemic situation.

The questionnaire will be entirely created by engineering girl students at Amrita and will be open to all girl students from schools across India in teams of up to two members. A series of online workshops will be provided to encourage students to build their confidence before the competition. Through this process, participants will get an opportunity to receive mentorship from some of the best minds in the field. The competition will be held on a third party site called a competitive practice competition and participating students can start their preparation for the competition immediately coddrill.

Amrita has a remarkable track record of organizing the world’s largest competitive programming competition – ICPC. The institution has sponsored a range of advanced initiatives for both high school and college students including coding camps, competitions and programming championships. A prime example is Amrita Engineering Entrance Exam and other such programs which are conducted for the students to excel in engineering entrance exams. With competition coding initiative AlgoQueen, university students and alumni will provide training sessions for those wishing to compete in the program, instilling in students the confidence to excel in their coding abilities.

With the growing trend of competitive programming in the IT sector, companies are always on the lookout for students with exceptional coding skills. Coding competitions such as AlgoQueen help to increase basic mathematical and algorithmic knowledge, while developing a strong foundation of problem-solving strategies, critical thinking and analytical abilities.
