Andhra Pradesh Train Accident Updates: Railways sources said the tragedy was a result of human error.

Thirteen people died and 50 were injured afterafter a passenger train overshot the signal and hit another from behind on the Howrah-Chennai line in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, months after the horrific three-train collision in Odisha that killed over 280.

A special passenger train going from Visakhapatnam to Palasa had stopped on tracks between Alamanda and Kantakapalle near Kothsavatsala because of no signal when the Vizag-Raigad passenger train rammed it, derailing three coaches.

Railways sources said the tragedy was a result of human error, adding that signalling was not noticed by loco pilot.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that all injured people have been shifted to different hospitals for treatment and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for families of the deceased.

“All injured shifted to hospitals. Ex-gratia compensation disbursement started- Rs 10 Lakh in case of death, Rs 2 Lakh towards grievous and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries,” Mr Vaishnaw posted.

Update | The death count has increased to 13 in the train accident in Andhra Pradesh last evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced financial assistance  of Rs 2 lakh from the PM’s National Relief Fund for the family of deceased and Rs 50,000 for injured in Andhra Pradesh train accident, PMO Office informed.

“The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased due to the train derailment between Alamanda and Kantakapalle section. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” PMO Office posted on X.

Expressing shock over the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy instructed officials to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured from the state.

He also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured from other states, according to an official release.
