Former men’s tennis world number one Andy Murray has been given a wild card invitation to the Australian Open, organizers announced on Thursday, praising his “fighting spirit”. The 34-year-old has been ranked 134th as he continues to be in good form after persistent injury problems. However, at the end of last season he recorded two top-10 victories over Wimbledon semifinalist Hubert Hercz and Italy’s Janic Sinner.

He also showed some form by defeating compatriot Dan Evans and another former world number one Rafael Nadal at an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi last week.

Australian Open CEO Craig Tilly tweeted: “Five-time finalist @andy_murray has been awarded a main draw wildcard.”

“Andy is renowned for his fighting spirit, passion and love of the sport and I am delighted to welcome him to Melbourne in January.

“We can’t wait to see you on #AO2022.”

Murray has three Grand Slam titles to his name – Wimbledon twice in 2013 and 2016 and the 2016 US Open – but the Australian Open knocked him out despite reaching the final five times.
