A special court on July 11 rejected the default bail plea filed by former state home minister and Nationalist Congress Party cabinet minister Anil Deshmukh against him in a corruption case. Special Judge SH Gwalani dismissed the petition.

Shri Deshmukh had applied for default bail arguing that The chargesheet of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is incomplete And so the investigation was not completed.

However, CBI’s counsel Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh argued that the charge sheet was complete as it had named Mr Deshmukh as an accused and listed the charges.

The case dates back to March 20, 2021, when former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh wrote to the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray accusing Mr Deshmukh of misusing his position and powers to take illegal monetary gains. The letter cited instances of Mr Deshmukh allegedly giving instructions sacked police officer sachin waze and another to collect ₹100 crore from bars and restaurants in a month.

The Bombay High Court had on April 5, 2021 directed a preliminary inquiry by the CBI against Mr. Deshmukh. Soon after, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stepped in and started probing money laundering charges against him.

An FIR was registered against Mr Deshmukh on April 21, 2021, under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (taking bribe other than legal remuneration in respect of a Government Act). act. He was arrested by the ED on November 2, 2021 and is lodged in Arthur Road Jail.
