Patna:

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s security was again breached today at a public meeting in Nalanda where some youths burst firecrackers, triggering panic for a while. Sources said one of the miscreants has been apprehended and taken to the police station.

As part of his Jan Samvad Yatra, Mr. Kumar is visiting all the seven assembly constituencies of his parliamentary constituency Nalanda, meeting people and learning about their problems.

Today’s public meeting was being held in Silao, Pawapuri and Rajgir.

But on the grounds of Gandhi High School in Silao, when Mr. Kumar was meeting people as part of a mass dialogue programme, an explosion occurred just 400 meters from the chief minister. This was followed by a stampede as panicked people ran to get out.

After the police managed to establish order, it was found that the explosion was caused by firecrackers. The police managed to arrest the man involved, who was still carrying several matches and firecrackers.

The accused was found carrying more firecrackers and matches.

Sources said that the youth is a resident of Islampur. Sources said senior police officers are questioning him to know his motive.

Last month, Mr Kumar was attacked by a man in his hometown of Bakhtiyarpur in yet another major security lapse. A man from behind was seen climbing the stage with quick steps and hitting Mr. Kumar on the back. The chief minister’s security personnel immediately pulled him over.

The man caught on CCTV camera during the attack was found to be mentally ill.

Describing the incident as “unfortunate”, state minister Ashok Choudhary said, “There was a lapse on the part of the people in charge of the chief minister’s security. There should be an inquiry”.
