Another Tamil Nadu teenager dies by suicide after NEET medical exam: Police

According to police (Representational), the teenager was worried that she would not pass the exam

Chennai:

A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide on Monday night in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district, a day after appearing for the medical entrance exam NEET.

This is the second incident in the state in two days related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET 2021) for admission to undergraduate medical courses in India.

According to the police, the teenager was worried that she would not pass the exam.

He had secured 93 percent marks in the 12th examination.

The incident happened on a day when the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a bill to abolish NEET and grant medical admissions on the basis of marks obtained in class 12th. A high-level committee headed by Justice AK Rajan (Retd) had recommended scrapping of NEET. Stating that the exam favors the elite and denies opportunity to the poor, who are educated in the local language and who cannot afford private tuition to pursue medicine.

On Sunday, a 19-year-old man died of suicide hours before the exam, which was postponed due to Covid and held again, amid calls to postpone it.

The young student – Dhanush – was the son of an agricultural labourer. He had failed to clear NEET in his last two attempts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin appealed to the students not to lose hope and assured that his government would take forward the law against NEET.

Tamil Nadu has long opposed NEET and demanded that the state be allowed to conduct its own medical entrance examination.

Tamil Nadu had scrapped the NEET exam for almost a decade, saying it favored the rich as poor students and people from rural areas were unable to afford private coaching. Over the years, 16 medical aspirants have died by suicide in the state.
