The Committee of Administrators announced an eight-man squad in Bangalore with a women’s team subject to approval from the Sports Authority of India. Diya Chitalewho was named as standby, filed a writ petition in the Delhi High Court challenging his exclusion and now Manush ShahiThis player, who was named as a reserve in the men’s team, has also done the same.
Manush’s father Utpa Shah told PTI, “We filed a writ petition in the Delhi High Court today. The hearing in Chitale’s case is on June 10.”
The development came on a day the CoA wrote to the players that no final decision has been taken on the selection of men’s and women’s teams for the July-August event. It also held a press conference in Bangalore on the squad announcement, although it was specified that the women’s team was subject to SAI’s approval.
On Monday, the sports ministry-backed body put the ball back in the CoA’s court, saying team selection in major international events is “the responsibility of the national sports federation”.
“The government or SAI will not have direct participation in the selection process, except to ensure that it is fair and transparent,” SAI tweeted.
In its mail to the players, the COA wrote: “The email dated 2-6-2022 regarding submission of documents was purely with a view to complete the documents in advance to avoid delay (Visa) and it was selected The list was not communicated.
“It is now learned from newspaper reports that the said email has been relied upon as a communication to a select list approved by the CoA.”
“The list of players to represent India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games is awaiting the approval of the CoA,” the note to the players, accessed by PTI, said.
As per the original list, the selection committee had picked Manika Batra, Archana, Sreeja Akula and Reeth Rishi in the squad and Chitale as standby.
The men’s team consisted of experienced Sharath KamalG Sathiyan, Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty with Manush as reserves.
The controversy over the selection criteria has attracted a lot of attention.
Team selection affects performance in domestic (50 per cent) and international tournaments (30 per cent) while the remaining 20 per cent is left to the discretion of the selectors. However, the CoA has decided to change the ratio to 40, 40 and 20 from next season.
