Seoul: North Korea reported the outbreak of an unidentified intestinal pandemic on Thursday, potentially adding to the strain on the isolated country’s health system battling an unprecedented Covid-19 wave.

It did not report the number of people affected, or elaborate on what the disease was, but referred to enteric gastrointestinal tract.
“(Kim) stressed the need to stop the epidemic as soon as possible by taking a well-knit measure to completely prevent suspected cases through epidemiological examination and scientific tests to confirm cases,” KCNA said.
The reported outbreak comes as the North deals with its first outbreak of Covid-19 infection. It declared a state of emergency last month amid concerns over a shortage of vaccines and medical supplies.
