Anurag Thakur stresses on need for ‘Indianness’ in Indian education

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday said that the National Education Policy 2020 is a comprehensive set of guidelines and recommendations for the Indian education system. This comes at a time, when several ruling governments have been adhering to altering syllabus.

Thakur who was attending the inauguration of a 3-day National Conference on Recent Advances in School Education (RASE-2023) said that the National Education Policy aims to make education more inclusive, engaging and relevant for students.

At the event Thakur said the NEP2020 is to ensure universal access at all levels of school education at any fundamental literacy and numeracy reforms in school curriculum and pedagogy focus on early childhood care and education. He said the NEP 2020 is not only limited to one language but mother tongue and other local languages have also been strengthened in it.

Emphasising on the importance of NEP 2020, Thakur said the education policy  has not been drafted by ‘few western minded people sitting in their air conditioned rooms’.

“In fact, suggestions of over 6 Lakh people from across the nation have been included in it to make it a comprehensive one.” he added.

The union minister said Indianness is very much necessary in Indian education which was not visible in the education policy made after Independence. He said proper discussion is required to know why we were not taught our actual ancient history.

He said Mughals and Britishers destroyed our education system, culture and values but now in this 75 years of India’s Independence we have to come out that slavery thinking.

Anurag Thakur’s statements come on a day when Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said that school books will be revised from this year itself. Old books won’t be recalled, but supplementary textbooks will be sent to school with instructions on what to teach and what to be left out.

The altering of syllabus by Delhi University, NCERT, and CBSE to look after the convenience of students has garnered much heat from various sections of the society.
