Apple iPhone and Apple Watch will get next-gen 3D Touch, patent filing shows: Here’s how it will work

The Cupertino giant Apple brought the 3D Touch feature with the iPhone 6S. This feature was a huge hit among the users, but later the company discontinued it and kept 3D Touch only for the trackpad on its MacBook laptops. Now, Apple is said to be bringing back 3D Touch on the Apple Watch, iPhone, and MacBooks. According to a recent report, Apple has acquired a patent for the next-generation force-pressure sensors. Earlier this year, there were reports that Apple may replace the crown on the Apple Watch with a new optical sensor. It is also mentioned in the patent as it shows that the Force sensors are designed for small form factor devices such as Apple Watch and Apple AirPods.

report in patent Apple states that regular sensors occupy “substantial volume,” and the technology outlined in the new patent will be based on microelectromechanical fluids capable of forming pressure-sensitive surfaces. The patent application also contains an image that shows where Apple plans to put the sensor on the Apple Watch. Another patent hints that Apple is working on a smart band for the Apple Watch that will come with a sensor. As per the report, these “smart bands” will be able to monitor blood pressure and even pulse wave velocity.

A patent also shows how sensors based on microelectromechanical fluid could be used inside iPhone displays and trackpads for MacBooks. According to the patent, the sensors can “accurately detect small or gradual changes in force.” Reports suggest that this could very well be an explanation of how the next generation of 3D Touch will work.

While it all sounds great, it’s unlikely any of these technologies will make it to market in the near future. As with many technology manufacturers, patents filed and granted are not for immediate use and many times, the patents that are granted never make it to a commercial product or service.
